Re: Obese People
When they applied their figures to life expectancy at age 40, the researchers calculated that compared with people drinking up to 12.5 units a week:

those who drank 12.5 to 25 units a week were likely to live 6 months less
those who drank 25 to 44 units were likely to live 1 to 2 years less
those who drank more than 44 units were likely to live 4 to 5 years less

Counting units is a load of old shit. Couldn't give a toss if it takes 18 months off my life.

Off for a run now because I eat at least a packet of crisps a day and ram pistachios down my cake hole continuously during the cricket season. I'm not, nor ever have been or ever intend to be a fattie. Everything in moderation with a binge whenever you fancy it is my motto.

Re: Obese People
From.your stuck.point of view it is because you are judging what you can see and comparing to damage you can't. If the safe levels of alcohol are set at 14 units then anything you are drinking above that is likely to be doing damage..Is that respecting your body?

Simple yes or no answer will suffice

Re: Obese People
Debs, you are saying that drinking 6 pints across 7 days is showing the same disrespect and causing the same damage to your body as eating yourself into obesity. That's a ridiculous thing to say.

Re: Obese People
Orwell’s. All those things you just mentioned are clearly labelled with their sugar content and how that relates to the daily intake. It is your responsibility to read that and make the decision about whether to eat it or not.

Re: Obese People
No why are you missing the point here? is it deliberate?

This is about the point made that obese people don't respect their body, but it doesn't take that many units of alcohol to reach a safe limit by which you aren't damaging yours. Therefore someone might feel perfectly healthy drinking 21 units a week is likely to be doing damage and not showing their body much respect after all you are pouring what js toxic straight down yourselves.

I am.not saying either are good. I am.saying people in glass houses shouldn't be throwing stones.

Re: Obese People
“Why is sugar bad for you Hermit?”

It isn’t. Too much refined sugar is bad for you though.

If you consume too much refined sugar then stop doing it if you want to be more healthy and keep doing it if you want to remain unhealthy. Not having a PhD in the effects of refined sugar is not essential if you want to cut it down.

Re: Obese People
Even in the helpful link Hermit put up, it gives you a few of the ways in which the food industry hides sugar in our food. How many people here think a healthy breakfast is a cereal like Alpen or Bran flakes and a fresh orange juice? I would imagine plenty yet fresh orange juice is very nearly as bad as full fat coke and most cereals are loaded with sugar.

You think 6 pints of lager spread across 7 days is the same as being obese.

That isn't like for like.

Re: Obese People
Think orwells is getting at a very good point here. It's quite worrying how some things which are absolutely loaded with sugar and/or refined carbs and/or other assorted chemicals are generally considered healthy. If not "health foods".

I believe Hermit when he says people have agency but marketing has a lot to answer for.

Re: Obese People
Neither of you are fielding it well because you are both not comparing like with like.

If you above 14 units per week you'd most likely be doing hourself damage. 14 units is six pints of average strength beer or seven glasses of wine.

I am.guessing many would put away more than that.

Re: Obese People
It's weird how people make excuses and need to be told what is simple common sense.

I always liked biscuits and crisps but obviously it would be stupid to eat 3-4 packets a day - but some twats do. A pack of dark chocolate digestives lasts me about 10 days. Of course, I could probably demolish them in one evening but that is not the point.

The same with Burger King, Dominos, KFC, Pizza Hut,McDonalds, Subway - maybe on occasion out of necessity but don't eat it regularly - it's fucking shit and cheaper to make your own food most of the time.

My brother in law is always stuffing his fat fucking face with the stuff then complains that he feels tired. There's a reason for that you stupid fat cunt.

Re: Obese People
If you don’t know that too much sugar and not even exercise to compensate leads to obesity then that!s on you.

You’re infantilising people and trying to deprive them of their agency Orwell’s which is strange given your moniker. There is an abundance of information and resources about sugar everywhere. If the individual ignores all that and gorges on it as well as stuffing their kids’ mouths with it, then that is on them. It is their responsibility not the big bad government or nestle.

orwells tragedy 12:51 Wed Oct 9
Re: Obese People
Yes, that's exactly the same thing Hermit. How many people believe smoking or drinking doesn't have any detrimental effects on you and how many are aware that sugar is the major cause of obesity? You've only got to look at this thread to see how few people know what sugar does, how it does it, and why the food industry don't want you to know the facts.

Re: Obese People
Hermit is fielding this one much better than I can. However...

"However one thing i will say is that while no-.one in here would encourage someone to overeat, i have often had people try to.pressure me to.have a good drink."

Firstly, if you've never been encouraged or fancied getting a massive meal down you which exceeds the recommended calories a day or whatever, I'd suspect you've never left your house.

And secondly I very much doubt anyone's ever pressured you to have a good drink every day of your life until it fucks you up.

You can do one of the above every once in a while and as long as you keep everything else reasonably in check and be absolutely fine. And someone who does this, who holds negative views about someone who doesn't and does it every day til its a serious burden on their health, is not, as you said, a hypocrite.

Their lives might well be a TOTAL mess but at least the vast majority of serious drinkers don't suffer the ignominy that comes with being a FAT mess.

There's the rub.

Re: Obese People
You both seem.to be ignoring the facts in order to.wifully miss my point. Also i have clearly stated in an earlier post that ultimately its up to the individual to change their habits.

Let me make it clear.

If someone eats a poor diet then yes in most cases you will clearly see that. If a person is regularly drinking over what is considered healthy for their liver, kidneys etc then because you can't see its effects it does not mean they are showing their body any more respect does it?
